Accommodation was in Nissen Huts. These were developed during the First
World War by Major Peter Norman Nissen of the 29th Company Royal Engineers,
UK.
They were used extensively by the Allies during the Second World War for
military camps and airbases. Made simply from rolled corrugated steel,
Nissen huts were cheap to make, and easy to transport and erect.
The huts consisted of four units each - larger families were accommodated
in three or four units.
The first migrants to arrive at the Nunawading Hostel in 1952 were people
who had been transferred from the Williamstown Brooklyn Hostels
A primary school was located
in one of the huts, from 1952 until 1958, staffed by Education Dept teachers.
