The Nunawading Migrant Hostel opened in 1952 and closed in 1987.

Initially, migrants came out from the UK, as part of the Australian Government's Assisted Migration Scheme.

Hostels had been set up throughout Australia, and arrivals lived in the Hostels for periods of betwen six and 18 months,  gaining local employment until they had sufficient money to put a deposit on a house.

It was sited on undeveloped land on the west side of Rook's Rd, extending from a point opposite Lucknow St in the south to Gibson St in the north. It was locally known as Eastbridge - a nearby legacy is Eastbrdge Court. It is within the present-day Whitehorse Council local government district.
