Good progress, is being made in the laying of a
third large water main for ten miles, from the Silvan aqueduct
at Olinda to the large service reservoir at Mitcham, which
has been proceeding since the beginning of the year. The
work, which will cost over
£100,000 is now in progress in White Horse-road, Ringwood, and
considerable excavation is necessary to enable the huge 46-inch mains to
be placed in position. It is hoped by the Metropolitan Board that the
new main, together with an enlargement
of the Olinda aqueduct and the construction of a main from Mitcham to
the service reservoir at Surrey Hills, will enable better
service and pressure for Kew and Richmond in summer months.
The main now being laid will be completed before the end
of the year. The illustration show a mechanical excavator at work,
