IMPROVING THE WATER SERVICE TO EASTERN SUBURBS.

Although the water supply of Melbourne Is sufficient to meet requirements for many years, the pressure in many suburbs is poor owing to the lack of large mains. The Metropolitan Board of Works is constructing large mains to tap the resources of tho various wator systems, and it is now engaged on the construction of a 46-inch main pipeline from Mount Evelyn to the service reservoir at Mitcham. This new main will tap the O'Shannassy system, which serves tho eastern suburbs. It will be in operation before next summer. The photograph was obtained at Ringwood, where a large steam shovel is at work making a trench 10ft. deep to hold the pipes. (Argus, Feb 10, 1926)
