THE GRAINSTORE

In 1906 Murphy Bros had opened their Grainstore on the SE corner of Burwood and Auburn Rds, adjacent to the Bakery. Prior to this they had managed their business from a site in Glenferrie, then rented a shed on the SW corner of Burwood and Auburn Rds.,

The new Grainstore was actually on the site of the former Commercial Bank, which had been there from 1880 and closed down before movng to a new location  on the corner of Burwood and Glenferrie Rds..

The old bank was completely stripped bare internally and rebuilt, but retained the walls and roof.

It Is still there today, with the sign "1906" prominently visible on the fascade - it originally serviced customers locally and across the eastern suburbs with lifestock fodder, bran, hay, grain, straw, chaff, oats, wheat, barley, delivered by horse and cart. A major customer was "Black's Dairy", in Mont Albrt Rd, Mont Albert..

In later years, the Grainstore and the Bakery entered into a business relationship  for joint use of some facilities, including stabling of horses and garaging of carts in the Bakery complex.  In return, the Store supplied fodder for the bakery horses.
