The highly scenic Acheron Way
(36 km) starts from St Fillans, 3 km north-east of Narbethong off the Maroondah Highway. This good gravel road heads
south-east along the highly scenic Reefton Spur to Mt Donna Buang, through densely forested, mountainous terrain that offers
views of Mt Victoria, Ben Cairn and Mt Donna Buang.
The road was officially opened on January 17, 1929 at the Donna Buang
end (see picture from the Argus above)
Sadly, there were lives lost in the 1939 and 2009 bushfires which ravaged the area, but there has been amazing regeneration
and regrowth since.
The road follows the Acheron River for much of the route.
It is a dry-weather road - in winter the section from Donna Buang is snow- covered and unsuitable for 2WD vehicles. The
road is mainly a gsntloe gradient, but there are some tight corners. The views are superb!
The route was originally conceived as an alternative scenic road to Mt Donna Buang via Healesville, the Blacks' Spur, and
the Maroondah Highway.
