BACKGROUND
The section of this road, either side of Stud Rd, marks part of the original northern boundary of
the Reserve. The date of construction is unknown, but is thought to be in the 1900-1915 period.
Police Rd actually starts in Springvale, but is not continuous,
due to the "break" at the western edge of the Tirhatuan Wetlands. It continues as a winding walking trail along the northern
boundary of the Tirhatuan Public Golf Course. It restarts as a vehicular road further on, at Tanglewood Drive, crossing
Stud Rd, after passing the edge of a modern residential area built c1955.
1915
An
Army Survey Map shows the road designated as "Police Paddocks Road" - it is not known when the modern shorter
name "Police Rd" was introduced.
1940
The Springvale end of the road
ended at Gladstone Rd
1946
The shorter name Police Rd appears on some maps
1953
The springvale end of the road ended at the Dandenong Creek.
From
Stud Rd, the road is sealed as far as the entrance to the East Rowville Power Station. A locked gate across the
road prohibits private vehicle access, but walkers are permitted to use it - it's primarily a fire management track..
The road passes next to the southern boundary of the Rowville East Power Station and adjacent Waverley Golf Club.
.
Walkers may continue easterly through grassland, beneath the HV power lines. eventually
reaching Churchill Park Drive.
Police Rd actually continues within the grouinds of the
Golf Club - It links with other pathways in the Golf Club grounds ending at a locked private entrance gate at the Golf Club,
on Churchill Park Drive. The Golf Club officially opened on December 31, 1963, and it is thought that the private section
of Police Rd became part of the Club at that time.
On the south side of the track, there is unfenced
dense bushland - a walking track passes through this scrub, which terminates on Frankston Drive.
